The life events that reopen a closed door

Outside open enrollment, coverage usually requires a qualifying event. Recognising one quickly is often the whole value you add.

What agents see most

Which events come up most often?

Losing other coverage, a move that changes which plans are available, marriage, and the arrival of a child through birth or adoption. Together these account for most of the special enrollment work an agent does.

Does voluntarily dropping coverage count?

Generally not. Losing coverage is treated differently from choosing to end it, and not paying for it is different again. This distinction disappoints people, so explain it early rather than after hope has built.

How long is the window?

Limited, and it runs from the event rather than from the day someone thinks to call you. Confirm the current window for the client’s situation, because the difference between acting this week and next can be the whole opportunity.

What is the first question to ask?

When did it happen, exactly. The date sets everything else, and a household that has not thought about the date usually finds it once you explain why it matters.

Catching them earlier

How do I hear about events sooner?

Tell clients at enrollment which changes are worth a call: a job change, a move, a marriage, a new child. Most people do not know a life event has anything to do with insurance.

What if the window has closed?

Say so plainly, note when the next open enrollment is, and keep the relationship. An honest no now earns the call next time; a vague maybe costs you both.
